Beat Konducta Vol. 5: Dil Cosby Suite

Magnus | August 25, 2008

Review, recommendation, whatever. This is more of a reminder that the newest BK is available for purchase (digital only so far) HERE! Madlib teamed up with J. Rocc this time around, and yes… it’s a Dilla tribute! Oh and, this is a tribute, not another Dilla album, so it’s Madlib using some Dilla elements at most. Still very awesome!

CD and Vinyl will come with the release of Beat Konducta Vol. 6: Dil Wither Suite later this year. I might do a full review when that day arrives, still TBA.

But until then… Beat Konducta Vol. 5: Dil Cosby Suite

Favorite songs: Ahh, give me some time to listen to it ok?

One insanely cool video

Magnus | August 23, 2008

Better viewed in HD over at… here.

Don’t know much about this other than that it’s made by David O’Reilly who is a visual effects guy. David has worked on movies such as “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “Son of Rambow”.

Really inspiring and awesome.

Recommendation: Big Shots

Magnus |

Green light

Milpitas, California, the year is 1973. Charles Hicks is born, later to be known as Charizma. With a Big L flow and a De La saz, I can’t believe how slept on this is. While some experienced wild fame boosts after they died (Dilla, Big L etc.) Charizma was more or less forgotten. This is a shame, because Big Shots is one of the best early 90s/ late 80s hip hop albums I’ve heard (i love that era). It’s like every other album at this time + better, clearer flow from Charizma and more original and fresh production from PBW. This is also the way it’s supposed to be, one MC and one DJ making an album. And this was the case in 1989 when 16 year old Charlie C hooked up with then 19 year old Peanut Butter Wolf then named Chris Manak. Charizma was tragically killed in 1993, devastating considering that he was a better rapper at the age of 16 than most rappers will ever be.

[Apple juice break]

Be certain to get this, you will not be disappointed at all, most likely blown away. One of those albums that if you haven’t heard it before, it hurls Charizma up to your top 10 MCs and PBW up in your top 10 producers.

Favorite songs: Red Light Green Light, Devotion, My World Premiere, Ice Cream Truck, Charizma What, Soon to be Large

Recommendation: Shine Through

Magnus |

[Sentence describing the likelihood for you having heard this or not]

I have already told some of my people about this, the feedback was mixed (Pål liked it, Stelf didn’t). Aloe Blacc, said to be the indie R. Kelly (the singing part not the eeeeww part), put together this blend of Hip Hop, R&B, soul and spanish… Yes Spanish, this was the part Stelf wasn’t feeling, but I love it. Some songs are in spanish, like a cover of “Ordinary People”. Aloe (Vera, no) was brought up in Orange County speaking both languages, so why not? With a varied album like this, you’re bound to like one or two songs on this album, hopefully all of them. The Jackson brothers produced one track each on this (released from Stones Throw, what would you expect?), the rest is by Aloe himself. There’s one track that I especially like (not that I like it supermuch, but more than most of you might do), “Busking”, sends my mind back to cold early november mornings waiting for the bus (have a listen, you’ll understand). Listen through this on iTunes before buying, then buy it, because you’ll love it, because I tell you to… maybe.

Favoright songs: Nascimento, Caged Birdsong, One Inna
